Mission Statement
The Mill of Benholm Project
Scottish Charity number SC036928
Mill of Benholm is a company with charitable status which works
in partnership with Aberdeenshire council to provide work
experience and training for adults in catering and horticulture.
Our future development is dependent upon community involvement.
The site is being developed by the trainees and part time paid
staff supported by volunteers. Your contribution will be important,
for example one volunteer working in the tearoom has enabled us to
increase the
number of weekdays we are open to the
public.
Aberdeenshire council contributes to the funding of this project
to support local people in the development and running of a visitor
centre/public park/community resource.
We also invite sponsorship from local business. This may take
the form of finance or donated expertise. Please talk to us about
how you could help.
For example the shop was built with materials donated by Deeside
Timber Frame Ltd of Stonehaven and it together with the signs,
visitor information boards, plant display structure, was made by
locals donating their time and specialist skills.
Call in at the office, telephone 01561 362466 or e-mail info@millofbenholm.org.uk
to meet with or arrange a meeting with Mike Burleigh the Project
Manager.
The Mill of Benholm Trust
The trust is a Charity, but also a Company Limited by Guarantee,
and is based at the historic Mill of Benholm near Johnshaven in the
former Kincardineshire. Its principal purpose is to provide
training opportunities, particularly in catering and horticulture,
but also in other skills such as working in an office environment,
for adults with special needs. This work is the subject of a
Service Level Agreement with Aberdeenshire Council, which sets out
the duties of both parties along with the financial provisions. In
providing this service the Board remains mindful of the need to
maintain an outdoor facility which is accessible to the local
community and tourists.
The main objectives are:
1 To relieve the suffering and distress, promote the welfare and
advance (through training and work experience) the employment
prospects of people who have learning difficulties, physical
difficulties or are experiencing or have experienced mental health
difficulties by carrying on trading activities where the work in
connection with such trading activities is mainly carried on by
people who are experienced or have experienced such
difficulties.
2 To promote for the public benefit the preservation (whether
wholly or in part) of buildings and other structures or features of
historic and/or architectural significance, and in particular the
buildings and machinery (forming part of the industrial and
agricultural heritage of South Aberdeenshire and North Angus)
running Mill of Benholm.
3 To advance education (i) in matters relating to the industrial
and agricultural heritage, environment, crafts, culture and history
of South Aberdeenshire, and North Angus and (ii) through promotion
of the arts and (iii) though educational projects directed towards
active citizenship. To encourage, stimulate and support
volunteering.
